The 3-Segment Framework for Cold Email Personalization

"Personalization" usually means a {{firstName}} merge tag. Real personalization is segmenting your list so each group gets a message written for their exact pain.

Most cold email fails not because the copy is bad, but because the same message goes to a list of people with wildly different problems.

Segment on the data, not the vibe

For a reputation-management client I split law firms into three segments using scraped Google review data: firms with under 80 reviews, firms with one or two recent bad reviews, and firms with 100+ reviews. Each got a completely different angle.

The under-80 group heard about catching up to competitors. The bad-review group heard about blocking negative reviews before they post. The 100+ group heard about doing it cheaper than their bloated current tool.

Why it works

When the first line references a signal only true for that prospect, it reads as research, not a mail merge. Segmentation is what makes personalization scale without sounding like a robot.
